Welcome to my blog. I write about my personal journey towards a work/life balance using these design principles: a third of the time working, a third of the time learning, and a third of the time being me.
I have spent most of my career figuring out ways government can work better for the people who need it. I have worked for state government, founded and run a non-profit—the California Workforce Association—and had the privilege of working for the U.S. Department of Labor when Tom Perez was Secretary of Labor. I am obsessed with good process, and believe that it beats “best practice” every time. I practice and teach facilitation, participatory leadership, and human centered design. I have two spectacular daughters, an amazing granddaughter, and live in a beautiful old house in Berkeley, California that was once a home for wayward girls. In my twenties, I built and lived on a houseboat, and now I own a sailboat. Life is good.
